  •  Engage Iran in pushing Assad on this (6+ / 0-)

They, after all, have the experience of Saddam's gas attacks during the Iran-Iraq war. This new President might have the "cred" to publicly explore the notion.

And, yes I expect the response to be conditioned on nuclear development and economic sanctions. That sort of response could mildly "kneecap" Assad. And of course lead to other opportunities....

    •  It's not hard. We recognize Irans fundemental (0+ / 0-)

right to enrich uranium for non military purposes.  We agree to a certain maximum stockpile (100kg) of 20% they'll be allowed to store for their research reactor.

Russia makes a lot of cash selling equipment and providing expertise to Irans nuclear program, btw.

In return, Iran and Russia get Assad to sign the Chemical Weapons Convention, and Iranian forces lock down his CW facilities.

We force the Gulf States to stop funding terrorists inside Syria.

It's a no brainer, and it's a win for everyone.

If only this actually were all about nerve gas, the diplomatic solution would be easy.
