    (as I understand current Baptist belief) that what other faiths may consider necessary for salvation, the Baptists hold that faith alone is necessary for salvation and therefore, ordinances are merely symbolic in nature

    This means that works are irrelevant so long as there is faith.  Currently, one discussion is if "once saved, always saved" is valid or if it is possible for an adherent to lose his faith and hence, his salvation
