  •  We are set up to be a two party system. (1+ / 0-)

There needs to be a viable conservative party for any of this to work.

    •  Yes, but it needs to be relatively sane. n/t (1+ / 0-)

Massachusetts is doing just fine. Vermont, too. California, even.

      And the Scandinavian countries.

of the Democratic Party, then some of the more centrist ones will gradually drift away from  the others as the far left becomes ever more liberal/progressive/socialist, which is the way humanity ever so gradually tends to move left to its own devices (i.e., devoid of dictatorships).  We will ultimately end up with left and right again, make no mistake, even though the right leaning impulse (me me mine what's in it for me screw you) is rather primal and backward looking, and the left leaning impulse (what's in the collective best interest of everyone) is far more evolved and stable over the very long term...

More war? Shorter life spans doing harder work? A religious revival? If we use your categorization to put all of science and civilization in the left camp then what would the right have left to me, me mine?

      •  Thank you. Give us a break with the Republicans (2+ / 0-)

already.  What's wrong with a Democratic majority for a decade or two?  The Republicans haven't had a worthwhile idea in a couple generations.

The US survived the collapse of the Whigs in the 1840's.

After the near destruction of the US economy, complicity in genocide and torture ever since Reagan, and the general crueling and dumbing of America, I pray that the Republican Party collapses or turns into a fringe third party that can never win except in the most regressive parts of America. After Bush and the last four years of obstruction, there's nothing they can do to get me to support them - what's more, there's nothing they can do to convince me to be part of a loyal opposition.  I'm actually a bit more centrist than many here, but I can't accept the GOP.

They are the enemy. I want to see them collapse as a party and as a political movement.  Not very nice, but there it is.

I don't think it will happen... but if it did, the Democrats would split and there would still be competition.
