is ridiculously expensive for the really good quality stuff which for me means no added sugar--I'm diabetic. So I started making mine from scratch using Contadina Crushed Tomatoes.

I use one of Ina Garten's recipes and save a lot of money by making my own. I'll make up a large batch and freeze it in smaller portions for when I need it.

I've never had any luck growing tomatoes, but I do grow a variety of herbs on my front deck and have access to a fresh supply for at least 8 months out of the year.

I've been retired and living mostly off my Social Security for four years now and that's really changed how I shop and eat. Fortunately, I've more or less always loved to cook and know how to crank out some really good recipes.

At this point I'm just cooking for myself and that's difficult because scaling down certain recipes can be difficult. Before my mother died a couple of years ago, I never had a problem with excess food because I could share it with her which was great. But these days I have to be careful not to cook too much of any one thing.

The only trouble with retirement is...I never get a day off!
