I happened to catch Moyers and Company this evening with guest host Phil Donahue.  His last guest was NPR Middle East Correspondent Deborah Amos.

She made the point that humanitarian crises caused by natural disasters inspire people to give generously with donations for aid.  Those caused by political upheaval get very little attention from donors.

That has certainly been demonstrated here.  After the earthquake in Haiti, Daily Kos raised over $130,000 for ShelterBox, which would fund 130 boxes.   A diary a few days ago by TexMex for ShelterBox and Syria drew very little attention.  I published a ShelterBox For Syria Challenge diary today stating that I made a donation of $500, and was hoping the community could match that so that we could provide at least one box.  Though I know there are lots of dynamics on which diaries "click", I must say that I was quite surprised at how totally ignored my attempt at Syrian relief was.

Lots of people are asking the question "what does it matter if people are killed by poison gas or bombs?"  Apparently it makes a lot of difference for humanitarian relief if the cause is a natural disaster rather than political upheaval.

I'm heading over now to check it out.

the grand boys and missed your vitally important post. Thank you so much for letting us know about it here.

I share your frustration about the lack of attention being given to the Syrian refugees, one half of which are children.

Tip'd, Rec'd, Republished and Shared your diary. Hope it helps a little.
