  •  How can it be cheaper? (11+ / 0-)

It's not like we pay the Mexicans who process our food much. It's not like our factory farms can't produce lots of cheap food.

So how can it be cost-efficient to ship perishable food half way across the world?

And the expectation is that for the foreseeable future it won't be. But we had to be willing to theoretically accept their exports for them to be willing to accept ours. The notion is that from a practical perspective it will be a one way chicken ticket, mostly for chicken feet.

    •  Huge container ships (0+ / 0-)

I was reading recently about the container industry. It costs somewhere between $1,000 and $2,000 for a container on the longest routes. A container holds a lot.

An iPhone would cost about 5¢ to ship because they are quite small.

and iPhones are several thousand dollars per pound.
Chicken is several dollars per pound, and are somewhat larger.

I simply do not see the economics of this.

      anyway.

The great conundrum confronting the chicken industry is that Americans are weirdos.  We're the only people on Earth who prefer white meat (overall, not talking individual palates).

The Chinese don't like white meat.  That's why China produces all those chicken treats for pets - it's the white meat Chinese customers don't want.

They see this as a genius move - now they can ship that white meat back in frozen burritos or canned soup.
