The townfolk of lexington and concord Massachusetts did not pass a hat around to collect money for the purpose of buying muskets for the dudes that assembled in front of the british troops.

Those dudes assembled on that village green were bearing their own personal weapons.

Furthermore, the townfolk of lexington and concord did not pass a hat around to collect money for the purpose of buying supplies, they were supplies gathered from the individuals and were held in common. From each according to his ability to make/provide, to each of the militiamen according to his need - they were in it together with what they could provide individually.
