  •  Different political picture in Congress today (1+ / 0-)

Bush had a solid Republican, rubber stamp, party behind him in his rush to war on Iraq. The Democrats were afraid to appear weak on defense, their Achilles heel. The NYTimes was in full battle dress.

Today the political landscape in considerably different. The Tea Party is moving toward isolationism. They are not dancing in lock-step with Republican leadership. The opportunity to force an Obama Fail is just too great to resist. The Democratic Left is naturally anti-war. They are also peeved at Obama's lack of action on issues important to the left, from environmental protection ("clean coal"), to willingness to bargain away social programs to stepping on Constitutional rights. It's clear to me, anyway, that there is a natural coalition forming between the Left and the Right on certain issues. Obama has to deal with this and it's time to brush up on his 11 dimensional chess game. If his opening move was to declare a "Red Line" as an absolute then his opening move is a disaster and he has to recover with the next set of moves.
