Everyone knows he said "red line" -- the words came from his own mouth.

Trying to weasle-word that statement later was wrong. If he felt "red line" was a mistake, he should just say so, or change focus and direction:

"Assad has crossed a red line and we will work with the entire international community to assure that he faces punishment for this crime. It may not be today or tomorrow, but Assad will be tried for war crimes."

Or whatever.  You get the idea.  He doesn't immediately have to go to war, just diffuse and focus on the international community as a whole.

He's hearing far too much war-monger talk among the people who surround him. And that's his own fault too.

"The law is meant to be my servant and not my master, still less my torturer and my murderer." -- James Baldwin. July 11, 1966.
