I think what shocks me the most (and also rings entirely true) in Agre's article is that "deference" is a central pillar of conservatism. They expect it, they need it, they create the habit of deference in others. Because it's their due.

I know many conservatives who truly believe they have earned this deference through their superior behavior, values, work ethic, delayed gratification, discipline, study, etc. etc., and feel extreme contempt for the pathologies of the "lower orders." If they ponder the strictures of class at all, my sense is it doesn't worry them much.

I was very excited when Ehrenreich wrote "Nickeled and Dimed," because it explained so clearly what it's like to swim outside the country club. Would love to see it as assigned reading in every high school in America.

I'm glad I'm not George W. Bush, because George W. Bush is going to hell

    •  Much as I hate to admit it (none)
the Catholic Church teaches deference to the Pope, bishop and clergy.  Respect (earned) and deference are different.  I respect those priests who I believe are living a decent life and have the same feelings for social justice I do.  For instance, here in Chicago, Father Pflager.  but although I remain a Catholic and get comfort from the church - I have come a long way from my childhood.  It's a perilous journey - but in accordance with St. Paul's dictum:  I have kept the faith.

Conservatives say "Silent Spring" is a dangerous book! Why do Conservatives Hate Birds?

    •  Thus a criminal as President who (none)
travels the country speaking to pre-screened members of his party pleased to show deference and "kiss the hem of the garment"  so to speak.

I believe another individual who felt contempt for the pathologies of the "lower orders" once uttered this famous line "Let them eat cake", which is just how out of touch with what's happening in middle and lower class America current wealthy conservatives have become.
