Sept. to October was a reasonable way of handling military action in the situation.  As was GHWB's handling of Iraq/Kuwait in 1991.

Our administration has been deeply confused by M.E. events--not that anyone ISN"T (and rightfully so) but dogmatic red-line building in such fluid environments is a really bad idea, as we see here.

was pathetic compared to 41's actual coalition.

We had the whole world on our side after 9/11.

Now, if there was a real need for intervention, and I'm not saying that is the proper course here, the US is out of luck.

year deterred the use of CW prior to 8/12/13, and that the threat of armed intervention afterwards has prevented additional attacks.

I can't imagine the President making the statement he did on August 12, 2012 without some rumbling in the intelligence reports that somebody in Syria was tempted by it, talking about it, and perhaps even conducting suspicious activity at the stockpiles.

And when you look at the text of his remarks, you can see that the warning was issued to Syria and rebel groups alike, and refrained from stating that the "consequences" would be military.

Such public statements are part of the diplomatic process. "Dogmatic" is not the right word for it.
