  •  My big beefsteak tomatoes (8+ / 0-)

are ripening well, but are splitting on the bottom when fully ripened, so I'm picking them when they are still a little green.

The romas are ripening slowly.  I was hoping for a big weekend tomato sauce making marathon, but they're only ripening a couple at a time.

We stopped watering them a couple of weeks ago to force ripening, but it's rained every other day since then.

I gave Doug the squirrel a good talking-to about staying out of the shed.  I could not find a loose spot in the chicken wire where he is getting in, which upsets me.  The last time squirrels got into the storage shed, they dragged in branches and made a nest the size of a tire, along with damaging the roof

I haven't caught him in the garden yet.  I'm hoping he'll stick to the giant pinecones in my neighbor's trees.

    •  That's what's causing the splitting, the rain. (7+ / 0-)

My Romas turned out not to be as flavorful as I'd hoped. I've been making gazpacho out of them instead of sauce, since I have a lot of cukes and green peppers too. Several batches now in the freezer.

Good luck with your squirrel. They do have a mind of their own.

discussed the fate of the dozen romas I picked today.

BTW, Ocean, thanks for mentioning tomatoes; I went right out and picked.

We may be making pasta tomorrow. You're invited, it's only a 200 mile drive. (a little snark)

We had spaghetti tonight, ours were very good.  But more rain today, dunno how many more will ripen.

We're eating the green peppers as fast as they ripen.
