    immigrants from communist (or former) countries (Eg. Cuba, USSR) become Republicans or Libertarians once they become US citizens.  Seems they're so desperate to get away from anything they believe is remotely close to communism that they go to the opposite end of the political spectrum.

      As well, immigrants become staunch flag-wavers, when the conditions are right. They have to study the US Constitution, etc. and become immersed in their new country.

      With people who did not do well well in the Stalinistic dictatorships, they searched for ways that blotted out the enforced "communism" (a contradiction in terms, IMHO), and blundered into those dogmas that rewarded their search, wealth, independence from any authority and righteousness.

      Anyway, I think you're right in your analysis.

      with democratic societies, and with serious social inquiry independent of dogma and ideology.

      They are likely to think the political bent they were brought up in was the problem itself, when the problem was instead closer to how that bent and ideology were approached and made unquestionable.

      Instead of learning how a multi-party democratic society can function, they often prefer just out of experience to find what seems to be a polar opposite ideology and support that just as strongly as they were raised to support its antithesis.
