    I agree with many other’s posting here … it does not sound like there is an immediate need to sell one or both houses – so hold off on both of those solutions for a while.
    As far as your SIL – goes it sounds (based on your story about him) that he is a talented individual despite having no degree.  If for some reason, he cannot get on with a competitor company to the one he had worked for – is there anything stopping him from starting his own business in consulting and /or sales training?   Making unrealistic quotas; with the odds against you - means he has the talent to influence people – I would say highlighting that skill and talent in his own business would be the way to go.  There are many successful entrepreneurs that started off as “sales people”.
