    - Despite the state being an at-will employment one, did your SIL have anything in writing about sales quotas, commissions, and/or guaranteed draws? And more importantly, anything in writing about changing the goals/amounts?  Maybe there's something an employment law attorney could work with.

    - Make sure your SIL applies for unemployment while you all figure out the next move. I can speak from experience that it's not very much money, but it's better than nothing.

    - Does your SIL have any interest in working as an independent  handyperson/repair guy? That might not pay as much as sales, but it definitely would be more than unemployment if he had steady business.

    - Also consider that your SIL could apply to work repairs for a company. If he can work on cars, an auto mechanic's a possibility, too.

    - Assuming he doesn't have a non-compete agreement (and like others here mentioned, yes, those are technically hard to enforce, but practically, it costs money to fight an ex-employer in court who tries to argue otherwise), and given he seems to be able to build and develop strong leads, then your SIL probably will be able to find another sales job eventually. That doesn't help now, I know, but I do think that it means not seriously considering one or both houses right now.

    - If she's not already, is your daughter working? If so, is there any chance she can pick up more hours or ask for a raise?

    - Please talk with your friends. If they really are friends, you shouldn't feel guilty reaching out for advice and emotional support. It's not as if you're asking for a loan, you're just revealing yourself to be a human being who needs other human beings to help make it through the day like the rest of us. Don't suffer alone.
