    The book was published in 1985, so I don't think Orson Scott Card had drone operators in mind. It is possible though that he was thinking of other similar scenarios of killing-at-a-distance, such as the high-altitude bombing carried out by Americans in the Vietnam war.

    You write, "he thought it was a training exercise". Correct, but in his supposed training he engaged in genocide and other war crimes. However, the main issue, I think, is what is Card trying to do by contriving an "innocent killer" and what lessons--conscious and unconscious--will viewers of the film leave with?
