angle and realized it was planned from the beginning. I am just glad the anti attack voices didn't get too loud and ruin Obama's plan. I knew it was a setup, especially when they were willing to go to congress. Assad couldn't take a chance, although it didn't look like they would vote for an attack. For if they did, even if they approved in a close vote, Obama would have the blessing of congress behind him and wouldn't leave those who voted for it hanging and would have to attack.

if Obama didn't go to congress, House would impeach him.

Obama basically played all Middle East popular uprisings the same initially.  He called for the stepping down of the corrupt leaders and opening up of democracy.  He intervenes in Libya, and that went well because of geography- rebels went to a different city and big empty areas separated the two.  He let Tunisia play itself out.  He let Egypt play itself out, while presumably working behind the scenes with the military.  And he tried to let Syria do the same, but the chemical weapons made this difficult.  With Iraq, he orchestrated the pull out of troops, maybe more completely than he wanted to.  With Afghanistan there was a surge and the hunt for Osama (showing is willingness to use force) and now, the pull out and distancing from Karzhi.  I think Obama has tried to avoid intervention until Syria forced his hand with his bad behavior.  And he has made the Republican critics look like the hypocrites they are- except McCain, who genuinely has shown his belief that we should be the world's police force.  I don't think there is a massive chess game going on.  This is what diplomacy with military might looks like.  Obama is trying to avoid the quicksand and the giant rats and is doing OK.  Benghazi is an example of what happens when things don't go well.

but everyone is so weary of wars in the Middle East, we have let a corrupt and wicked leader ruin his country and kill his people.  And by we I mean the world, the UN, NATO and especially the Russians.  This whole thing is awful and I can't see a clear path to justice and reform.  So if Obama has screwed up, I don't see him being alone.

        •  "we have let ... ?" How the hell (0+ / 0-)

can any one have stopped him? Invade? Multi country invasion? And then the disparate opposition groups?

Assad did his worst and the rebels didn't collapse. He may be ready to come to the table now.

      lol planned from the beginning.

    •  If he really wanted Congress to (0+ / 0-)

approve he could have called them back early, as Britain did, before the public groundswell had a chance to influence them.

Obama also tipped his hand by saying he wouldn't feel bound by their decision. He had to keep the pressure on.

As far as the Congress vote: I think Putin and Assad respect Obama's skills a hell of a lot more than the majority at DKos.
