    You've never dealt with anyone who you knew was a sociopath and responded to nothing but the threat of power. Sociopaths don't have the same motivations that the rest of us have. They tend not to respond to the carrot and stick method if it's coming from the same person. There's a reason that in the field of psychology, there's a whole section geared towards being able to find sociopaths early. Or at least before they attain any type of power. Believe it or not, a lot of major corporations hire psychologists to come to their companies and actually see if any of their employees are sociopaths. Because they don't think like us. The reasons the rest of us have for doing anything don't apply to them. Which is why your reasoning doesn't work.
