    And very eccentric, to boot, but he is the man in charge there for now, and I would argue that the relationship with Russia is much more important than the Middle East in the long run. If the Russians can get Assad to turn over the chems, then Obama could preside over a nice thawing out of relations between Russia and the U.S.

      It's not an important country for us, is it?  And yes, I'm asking that seriously.

        According to the Federation of American Scientists, an organization that assesses nuclear weapon stockpiles, in 2013, Russia possessed an estimated 8,500 total nuclear warheads of which 1,800 were strategically operational. link
        The Task Force on Russia and U.S. National Interests Report identified five American vital national interests vis-à-vis Russia:

        Preventing the use and slowing the spread of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction, securing nuclear materials, and preventing proliferation of intermediate and long-range delivery systems for nuclear weapons;

        Maintaining a balance of power in Europe and Asia that promotes peace and stability with a continuing U.S. leadership role;

        Preventing large-scale or sustained terrorist attacks on the American Homeland;

        Ensuring energy security; and

        Assuring the stability of the international economy.  link

          That alone makes the place very important to us. Somehow our own chatter of "world's only superpower" has gone to people's heads in a very bad way. The Russian Federation is most definitely not the "other scorpion in the bottle" to the extent the Soviet Union was, but it is most definitely not dismissible as some here seem to think.

          As most of us old Cold Warriors suspected, the "two scorpion" thing's demise created a perhaps less fearfully stable world on many scorpions.

          They won't use nukes any more than we will.  As for the UNSC, there's no level of friendship with Russia that would get them to vote like us since their power depends on not voting like us.  It's a sucker deal to cultivate friendship with Russia to get their vote.

          As for the rest, Russia doesn't want nuclear proliferation any more than we do, we don't need their energy, and "balance of power in Europe" is pretty old-fashioned thinking.

      But he may have concluded that a powerful US president in full command would be easier to deal with than one who had been emasculated by his own legislature.
