if Syria doesn't give up its chemical weapons, they can always re-vote.  I don't want a dispute over compliance to allow the executive to authorize a military strike.

    •  But the AUMF keeps up the pressure. (5+ / 0-)

Do you really believe that Assad and Putin aren't just conceding just to stall? Because a lot of people here thought it was a brilliant move by Putin to stall.

Obama = Bush, but its stupid to keep repeating the same mistake.  If the Obama administration is worried about keeping up pressure, and not just getting an AUM passed, then they should push to postpone the vote.

Right now, no matter what happens at the UN, I would not approve of a strike on the Syria regime, for several reasons, all of which have been enumerated by countless posters over the last week.  I have not forgotten that this is a war of choice...

This is a chance for those pushing war to prove they are willing to seize peace.  Postpone the vote, let the UN take control of the weapons, let the situation come to a close.  But don't make the same mistake again.  Don't cede power to the executive.  The Obama administration has not made the case for war. So don't authorize them to start one.

      •  I heard the same argument on Iraq (0+ / 0-)

So if you don't want to believe this is Iraq, stop using the same script.

    •  No blank checks for war (2+ / 0-)

Since they feel they must do something right now, they should just pass a resolution condemning the use of chemical weapons, direct the administration to pursue all diplomatic means to prevent their further use and to return to the Congress with a concrete proposal in the event that diplomatic endeavors fail.

Even with a goal to seek a diplomatic solution, authorizing force now to strengthen the administration's bargaining position would be to write another blank check like the one given Bush.
