    •  Diplomacy I understand, warmongering with (7+ / 0-)

idiotic rhetoric in public I can live without.

And when the idiotic rhetoric is linked to violence I really start to get annoyed.

      It was unnecessary and childish,

Diplomacy is not about sharing our feelings and hugging it out.

What is said around a table is a different matter, and that is when diplomacy takes place, playing the psycho in the bar comes under propaganda.

Public posturing is an essential part of diplomacy. If you aren't willing to threaten force in public, then your threat is not credible.

What you should be doing now is looking at what just happened and figuring out how it worked, not complaining because your tummy hurt while it was playing out.

When we make Putin look like the reasonable one, great.

That we don't wait for results of inspectors shows we didn't learn from the past.

We should thank Bush for this recognition of our military adventurism and menacing authority

The problem was they didn't have an explanation how bombing would solve the problem, just how it would be punished.

Days before Kerry's statement, Obama and Putin had discussed this solution at the G20 Summit.

In a further development, a spokesman for Vladimir Putin said the Russian president had discussed the weapons handover plan with Obama at last week’s G-20 summit.
That shed a different light on Secretary of State John Kerry’s mention of the plan at a news conference in London on Monday. That had previously been characterized by spokesman Jen Psaki as an  off-the-cuff “rhetorical argument.”
In an ideal world, people who discover that the core assumption behind their belief is wrong respond by changing their minds.

I don't think this is an ideal world, though.

at G-20.  Really.  No Shit.  Or, at least, Thank God.

You count that as a "win" here?

So Kerry's 'oops' and State Dept walking it back as "rhetorical" was all part of a masterful plan?  For what serious, adult purpose?

                  Please spin me that tale.

I see we aren't living in a perfect world.

Yes, I'm counting the discussions as a win, in an argument about whether Kerry's statement later was a gaffe that the Russians seized on.

The walkback was necessary to maintain the credibility of the threat of force, and to avoid making the plan look like "the American plan," which would have made it impossible for Putin and Assad to accept it.

This is basic negotiating stuff here. I certainly hope you're not one of those people who has been banging away at Obama as a bad negotiator since 2009.
