    Seriously, Obama and his team did not just go off half-cocked about Syria. el-Assad has been on the regime chance list for as long as Iraq (just a lower priority under Bushco.) One reason is that major US ally and policy influencer Saudia Arabia want al-Assad gone and no this is not CT but front commonly reported in the mainstream news:

    I guess its much easier to pretend that American policy is all about the strategic gamesmanship of the current administration than recognizing that structural alliances are the major driver of who the US threatens or does not.

    So, the farce was not deliberate. Rather the pretext for the regime change move (first bomb and then wait for escalation) met with too much global opposition. And Here is the key difference between Obama and Bush, the former recognizes that unilateral move is bound to fail. So, Syria gets a temporary reprieve. But, it is only a matter of time until the administration will find another "crisis moment" that demands military action.

    I now not as much fun as debating how brilliant or inept is President Obama....
