  •  Maybe you are too young to remember but... (38+ / 0-)

stores used to always frame and hang NSF cheques on a wall of shame.  I remember my local chain supermarket used to have them over the cash register with "don't accept cheques from this person" over them.

It has been standard practice for many businesses, small and large, to post receipts.

Tax and Spend I can understand. I can even understand Borrow and Spend. But Borrow and give Billionaires tax cuts? That I have a problem with.

    •  True but a CC company will terminate your account (2+ / 0-)

If you are a small company of any kind and you fail to fire an employee who posts ANY cc-related customer details on the web for any reason, they will terminate your merchant account without mercy AND put you on the industry blacklist, making it unlikely you can ever get another account from a different provider.  They may very well terminate you even if you DO fire the employee, because it shows you violated the requirement to have a proactive education policy in place to prevent exactly this among other scenarios disclosing customer card card data.  There are very explicit rules about all this stuff and it's not only the digits the companies are concerned about.  The merchant services providers always err on the side of overreaction.

Obviously a big company like Red Lobster has more leverage, but they had to make some kind of statement.  I see a hopeful sign in that the headline of the diary says she was suspended instead of fired.  RL and the individual franchise are between a rock and a hard place on this incident.

So it's not only about abstract principles.  The server didn't realize it, but she put her local franchise at extremely serious and likely financial risk from impersonal forces who really don't give a flying eff about whether the customer was a racist or not.

So I see a web post like that going viral and I instinctively, emotionally,  think Well deserved, *sshole!  But at the same time I know an act like this can end up punishing the wrong people, even putting the employer out of business.

    •  Writing bad checks is a CRIME (1+ / 0-)

You could also post pictures of convicted shoplifters.

This person paid their check in full.  They opted out of tipping which, while morally questionable, is completely within discretion of the paying customer except in certain instances such as large parties or specialized service.

And racist slurs while disgusting are not illegal.
