      There's a few commenters that you'll always see being the "devils advocate" in certain diaries.  Usually diaries about workers or survivors.  I stay away from all their comments.  

      I would never post someone's receipt - but I do wish I could post my exact personal instances of being in the service industry.  But I wouldn't want it to look bad for my company.  

      I liked lightbulbs workers diaries.  Those were real.  

      I have seen a huge decline in just plain decency in customers lately.  

      Last week, a little child asked for a free sticker and as I was gladly giving him one, the male parental figure reminded him to say please.  The female parental unit said, "it's just a cashier, he doesn't have to say please."

      It's just a cashier.

      My face dropped.  I couldn't hide my "WTF?" look.  

      You would not believe what we deal with daily.  We have incredible customers that we know and love.  When they are sick, we volunteer to bring them food on our own time.  it's that kind of place.  But more and more... there's a steep decline in basic manners.  

      it used to be people would be embarrassed and apologetic if they were using their phone in a line.  Nowadays they MAKE calls during a transaction.  Once I said, "Hi how are you doing today?" to a man with an ear phone.  Know what he did?  He SCREAMED at me, "I'm on the fucking phone."  

      A ladies' kid dropped blackberries while putting them on the belt.  The child started to pick them up and the mom said, "oh they'll pick them up - that's their job."  and started dancing on the berries - making a HUGE mess.  

      I find it interesting that in another diary about a man throwing a kitten out a car window at a rally - it shows his car and public are asked to help find this monster.  

      Public shaming...  maybe not the best deterrent but man it sometimes is the only voice workers have.

        you "always see" but I do try to be a bit of a reality check on the "Every Corporation Screws Every Worker Ever Day" meme.

        Your observations are very real, but focused more on the general public then on any kind of corporate behavior and frankly I agree with you.  I worked in customer service for many years, professional services not retail, but I can relate to a lot of these anecdotes with similar ones of my own.  I mean hell... for 12 years I worked for nothing by lawyers and lobbyists!    

        But this story, and the discussion that followed it, could have been a lot more meaningful with a larger dose of reality.

        Just look at the facts:  Waitress receives a vicious note, she goes to her manager who SUPPORTS HER.  Assures her she has done nothing wrong and probably had more than a few choice words about its author.  It got reported up to higher management.  They are investigating it fully.  They are supportive of their employee.  She hasn't lost an hour of work, per the recent report.

        But what gets reported here?  Anything CLOSE to that?  No... original headline was "Red Lobster fires waitress over racist receipt."  Factually wrong when even the original diary blockquoted "suspended with pay" below the fold and its now updated to "not suspended at all".  

        And the comments... everything IMMEDIATELY went to "Fuck Red Lobster!"  "Bunch of racists!"  "They are just covering their ass!"  "They will throw this poor girl under the bus!"  "This should be illegal!" .... and all this based on what?

        And the girl in question....she was a target of something she clearly did not deserve.  I don't care if she is the worst waitress ever to plunk down a plastic cup of ice water... NO ONE deserves having racist insults thrown in their face at work.  She starts by doing the right thing by going to her boss.  The customer has already left the establishment so there is nothing left to do on that front.  And its not like Red Lobster told her to shut up and get back to work but rather then handle this as an employee where she is 100.00% in the right she posts corporate information with customer identifying data on the INTERNET under her own name.  

        The lack of class and decency is not limited only to the physical world on the other side of your cash register.  It is lamentably all around us.

        Good to know though that through all the war stories and ugly scenes, it sounds like you at least have a decent employer that looks out for its own.

          I don't think any of my posts have said anything about "fuck red lobster" :)  I do hope that RL does investigate the matter as they stated and 86s the customer from their diners.  I see far too many places who tolerate too many instances for far too long.  

          I'm just curious as to why we still have to eat the shitburger of "the customer is always right".  No they are not.   But it's not about customers really... for me it's about basic decency an manners.  

          I don't expect anyone to "respect" me or any worker.  I firmly believe respect is earned.  But no one should be treated less than simply because their job is seen as "less than".  

          For the record, I feel bad I can't post about my employment here because I LOVE where I work.  I think they are fantastic for the community and the local charities and our customers.  But I know that we have a policy about online stuff.  They have FB page even ( I don't ) but we can't post about our job... at all.  I'm one of those happy workers.  But I know that somehow my words could be twisted or my political posts could be attached somehow so I don't.  

          There are a few websites where workers can post and vent about their jobs or bosses.  I just wish I could post my "WTF?" moments as a human.  

          My best friend has heard of my tales, close calls and my pet peeves.  It's made her think about how she is in a line.  Lots of people just don't think.

        He reminded me of the department stores where I used to work over ten years ago.

        He was legit, but a resident troll and his asshole buddies (who are still here, by the way) ran him off.
