    Quantifying the subjective. It ties in with MB's future discussion of color and, I suppose, all sensory interpretation.

    Trying to describe a flavor without comparing it to anything may seem a bit easier than doing the same with color but it is tricky because the adjectives all seem to rely on shared experience... a taste may be called "sharp" or "bright", for instance but what that means to you or I may be totally different to someone else who hasn't experienced that particular flavor.

    Many years ago I described the flavor of uni as similar to the bottom of a tidepool. It caused quite a kerfluffle among our sushi lunch group at the time but I was inordinately proud to hear the phrase again, decades later and hundreds of miles away.

    (don't ask how I know what the bottom of a tidepool tastes like :)
