  •  democracy can fix this but the 'left' ignores (17+ / 0-)

    right wing talk radio.

the notion that 1200 coordinated radio stations reaching 50 mil a week with think tank designed propaganda, making made-to-order constituencies out of the same dittohead/teabag/gop-base makes no difference, is absurd.

yet aside from the specific boycotting of on talk show propagandist there is NO organized challenge to the ability of the corporate think tanks to short circuit the mechanism (democracy) designed to regulate and fix the problem you write about.

the idea that progressives would work hard to elect a president they think can fix this shit and then blame obama and his inability to turn a ship on a dime while continuing to ignore the right's best weapon, talk radio, is unbelievably naive and common on the 'left's' part.

Another relevant/related observation I've been intrigued with is what I consider to be an eerie passivity with which the population reacts in the face of increasing corporate-government corruption, criminality, and oppression.

Also, the utter inability for any type of social justice movement to take hold so it can grow and become powerful (organized, strategic, and cohesive) enough to be able to effect change, has been something I've been observing and thinking about for many years now.

I've always felt that there must be a logical explanation for this seemingly illogical docility exhibited by the population in the face of increasingly outrageous abuses and rampant government corruption.

RW radio's ubiquity and volume has completely distorted the feedback mechanisms that would allow the people who would act and fix this. pols don't have to listen to them- the think tanks watch for progress and reform and cut it down easily, with protestors going to the rally driving past the 50,000 watt stations making their protest irrelevant.
By claiming that anyone who questions authority or engages in undesired political speech is a potential terrorist threat, this government-corporate partnership makes a mockery of civil liberties.
OWS protestors all  over the country had no idea their efforts were being negated by a few national and local blowhards with giant megaphones egging on the cops, complaining about filthy hippies slowing traffic wanting handouts and leeching off of hard working americans.

what limbaugh said about OWS protestors wasn't particularly sexist but it was worse. and all over the country they could repeat it for months after the protestors were gone.

in NYC, how many of the protestors walked right by limbaugh founding station WABC at union station on the way to the protests.....

until the left can stop giving the right a free speech free ride on its talk radio monopoly it is taking a passive approach to the MIC problem, with much of the analysis and criticism wasted, because the MIC can short circuit the feedback mechanism needed to act on the problem.

      •  4 things to help end the RW radio advantage (2+ / 0-)

the 'left' can't compete with that monopoly as is. the answer is to challenge it in other ways, like the boycott. and as long as they have that advantage there will be no legislative fix.

RW radio is successful because it gets a free speech free ride. it is ignored and it's effects underestimated.

it works because it is practically invisible to the 'left' - we don't know what's on it and we don't respond (unless it's racism or sexism, which misses it's real value to the right).

the boycott is largely specific to liimbaugh and his hate speech, although hurting the point man is helping.

several things the left/liberals/dems can do that i can think of.

        1) there is no excuse for not knowing what the national and main local talkers are saying- what the RW think tanks are pushing. there is no excuse for the not having a readable analysis available- of the patterns and repetition, if not the raw transcripts. new transcript software might require very little training so that it can be automated. if there are copyright problems the dem party can keep it in house. or maybe transcripts  can be scrambled and still be useful for phrases, names, repetition, etc. the context is predictable and understood. the left must be able to respond in real time when the GOP or think tanks use those stations to attack and swiftboat or when they distort an issue being discussed. and their gods need to be challenged and discredited.

        2) RW radio piggybacks our universities to a significant degree. those universities need to be pressured to find non partisan alternatives for sports broadcasting. many RW radio stations that dominate states and cities would struggle and might have to fold if they couldn't depend on the association with the team logo for community credibility and ad dollars. no university can rationalize continuing associating with radio stations dedicated to defunding public ed, global warming denial, racism, and sexism- to name a few. if they took their mission statements seriously it would be a no-brainer.

        3) all progressive orgs need to take it seriously as a major opponent to any of their goals. include it in protests. any progressive effort of the last 25 years, locally or nationally, has been minimized by a few blowhards with big soapboxes. they've been wasting their volunteers' donations and time. protests don't work anymore because the young republican in the station on the way to the protest is louder, reading think tank talking points scripted specifically to undo the protestors aims. and they can keep yelling long after the protestors are gone. politicians and media can ignore the protestors. maybe the protestors need to go to GOP headquarters - those limbaugh megastations- rather than the capitols. then the pols and media would have to pay attention, and the teabagger/talk radio base would notice too.

        4) expand the boycott to all stations that do global warming denial and spread bullshit.
