  •  that's it exactly (5+ / 0-)

With all due respect to the diarist I think s/he is overthinking the issue. Their strategy: Voter suppression to the max and then more voter suppression.  And screw up the gov't and blame it on the Dems to their low info voters.

    •  There is much more to it (4+ / 0-)

Their strategy has always been to push every wedge issue as hard as possible. They never assume that one issue will win elections for them.

Unfortunately, too many Democrats seem to think that having the facts and public opinion on our side on almost every issue should be enough, without doing the day-to-day work of telling people about each and every one of the issues and each and every opposition politician in language that resonates, and motivating voters to get to the polls at every opportunity.

logic and emotional appeal, and emotional appeal will win out every time, particularly if the appeal is to give permission for people to indulge their worst moral impulses. They've turned a healthy chunk of the electorate into naughty children trying to see how much selfishness they can get away with, while their permissive "parents" set a shockingly bad example by getting away with even more.

Oh, and then there's the money. Never, ever forget, even as we celebrate social victories like advances in equal rights, that the GOP and the conservative movement have been financed, for the past 50 years, by a tiny group of obscenely rich people whose objective is to control as much of the country's, and the world's, wealth as possible. The money is the real reason for all of this, and the idea is for it end up in very few hands. They know they have to invest to produce returns. They've been at this for half a century straight, and they have no intention of giving up now. That's what I call taking the long view.
