  •  What exactly is (4+ / 0-)

remarkable in any way other than "Chutzpah"? A  (realistically) czar lecturing Obama on democracy? Jeez.

    •  Fair enough (7+ / 0-)

Maybe you could explain how Russia's system is worse than ours, bought and paid for as ours is by a tiny number of Oligarchs. Voter suppression is rife, and we just lost the Voting Rights Act in its most meaningful sense.

We don't get to criticize the way other countries elect their leaders, we just get to deal with them.

I hope that the quality of debate will improve,
but I fear we will remain Democrats.

Who wants to move to Russia? (crickets) jeez.

        We HAVE free elections

We have rules about voter rights.

The VRA was not lost- just the formula for jurisdiction was updated after 50 years.

Yeah I disagree with some of that, but equal Russia? get a grip.

and raise you an "open your eyes".

Russia is not the standard by which we should be measuring our progress.

But right now, we are going backwards with little sign of the trend reversing any time soon.

Russian is not an example anyone would want to follow. And we do not. Bu your assertion that our social and political system is no worse than ours is silliness on stilts.

Read the Gulag Archipelago, then get back to me and we'll talk about Putin's run in the KGB.

            •  I didn't say that it was (0+ / 0-)

              "no worse than ours".

But that is a very low bar, and even though you might not like it, the US system is corrupt, and rotten to the core.

              •  I think you are missing my point (0+ / 0-)

I do not think we "should strive to be as good as Russia". We are in fact light years better.

You were the one who compared the two nations as being similar.

I think that comparison is absurd.

I do not share your loathing of the US.

            •  The GULag ? (0+ / 0-)

If that's where your knowledge of Russian history stops it's you who needs to read up a bit. Putin, by the way, was a minor KGB officer, a Lt.Col. stationed in Leningrad, not Moscow where the power is.

The free market is not the solution, the free market is the problem.

      •  Is this a joke or a serious comment? (0+ / 0-)

Assuming serious, I guess I would start by pointing out that The US hasn't imprisoned any musicians for criticizing Obama. That would be one area in which the US system is better than Russia. Also, not a crime in the US to be gay in public. Russia's "system" kind of sucks on that one too.
