  •  Most Americans welcome this. The right has won (22+ / 0-)

the framing debate. People on food stamps are seen as lazy dead beats who don't want to work.

At our lunch table yesterday, we were discussing the NPR story about "just giving money" to people and not providing any "education" or other strings. One of our teachers who is probably a moderate but is certainly not a right winger said, "That might work in some places. People here in the US would just spend it on alcohol and stuff."

I didn't know what to say, and someone changed the subject. This was a table of teachers and associates. some of them have been on food stamps.

We have to some way frame the debate to explain better about food security. Otherwise, the republicans will run on freeing guns and cutting food stamps and win in 2014.

    •  Those two issues may go hand-in-hand. (6+ / 0-)

Maybe when people are hungry, they get desperate. Hungry people used to just steal food. Maybe now they use their weapons to express their anger.

and I turn the tables on them in an instant when they observe that people on food stamps are "lazy dead beats who don't want to work."

I say:  "Wow, really?  Maybe you run in different circles, but I know four of five people who are on food stamps and none of them strike me as lazy.  One of them is a public school teacher and a single Mom.  Who do you know that's on food stamps that's lazy?"

In an instant they realize the predicament I've put them in.  They're either going to have to admit that they run in circles of unsavory people who are lazy and don't want to work, thus placing themselves in a lower rung in social hierarchy relative to me; or they have to admit they don't actually know anybody that fits their characterization of food stamp recipients and are just parroting something they've heard but don't actually have any basis for believing.

Totally shifts the dynamics of the conversation.

claim that most Americans support cuts to food stamps.

Anecdotes about privileged  middle-class teachers don't count.

        Q. What is your position on food stamps.

        A. Let the children starve, because Atlas Shrugged.
        B. Feed the hungry children.
