I assume this means they're doing MITM attacks with full knowledge of Google or whomever.

The party of Kennedy is also the party of Eastland. The party of Javits is also the party of Goldwater. Where is our party? Where is the political party that will make it unnecessary to march on Washington?

(It's not clear whether this was done with the permission or knowledge of the router's owner.)

It does mean that any encription you use is worthless.

The brilliance of an MITM attack is that it defeats encryption without actually needing to crack any code. If you visit an impostor version of your bank's website, for example, the NSA could harvest your login and password, use that information to establish a secure connection with your real bank, and feed you the resulting account information—all without you knowing.

Google and others have been quite willing to give the NSA what they want on other occasions.

On the subject of MITMs I take it that that also means that the NSA could, whenever they want, use the harvested login and password to get into my bank account?

        Is there any feasible counter?

I don't think so, but smarter people may know more.

bother pressing tech companies to give up their users' passwords? If the NSA can just harvest passwords on their own.

This is something I have been watching for with some concern as it seems to me that once you have someone's password, you could post, email, etc. as them and use whatever you posted as evidence to frame people for, well, just about anything.

            •  Seems to me they are working on multiple fronts. (0+ / 0-)

              Back Doors, Data Harvesting,Business Intimidation,
Standards Sabatoge, MITM attacks and the list is growing.

Are those back doors in the voting machines too?
(NIST is into voting machines standards)

is that you don't need the cooperation or knowlege of either party. That makes them even more insidious.

          See here.
