people move around a lot more now a days than they used to so demographics change

gerrymandering before could last generations, now more like a cycle or 2

There are places all over the country where people moving in and out does not happen at the rate of the rest of the country. Staten Island has been solidly Republican for how long?
Some gerrymandered districts are likely to last a generation or two if there isn't a lot of growth or loss of business or change in standard of living in their particular part of the map.
