The crazies apparently are willing to pour unlimited amounts of money into the GOP machine (and its lobbying & media cronies), as long as it keeps moving rightward. We thought that the 1994 shut-down fiasco (thanks, Newt) was going to end that silliness. Instead, it inflamed it.

The fantasy that somehow if you can provoke Armageddon, you can slay the evil dragon once and for all is just that -- fantasy fiction, great in Tolkien movies but not in real life.

    •  Problem is, the further right they move, (0+ / 0-)

the more of their-less-than-fringe base they lose.

IOW, the saner their supporter, the most likely they are to lose him/her as they progress from ludicrous to a hybrid of an Alice in Wonderland Tea Party & an Electric Kool-aid Acid Test.

Republican Party--at least those who have been in it since 1996 until now--are so far to the right anyway that they have nowhere else to go, and not voting is not an option for them, apparently. They have to convinced of two things: 1) Their party has abandoned them; and 2) Voting is not helping them. There is no way--no way--they can be convinced to pull a "D" lever, but maybe they can be kicked out of the process entirely . . . (R voters who could at some point be talked into voting for a "D" left the R party a loooooong time ago.)
