Any political problems that Boehner has are richly deserved.

Shutting the government down isn't going off a cliff for the country.  Provided that the shutdown is short-lived, it is more of a nuisance (of course, people who lose services won't see it that way: I'm speaking in the macro sense).

What would constitute pushing the country off a cliff, is defaulting on our debt.  The consequences of that could be truly catastrophic.  I think that some of the House Republicans are insane/ignorant/fanatical enough to actually believe that this would be justified.  This wouldn't be drowning the government in a bathtub, it would be throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

      He's getting what he deserves.

I realize a short term government shutdown wouldn't be quite equivalent to driving the country off the cliff. A longer term one could, though. Also, you're absolutely right that the debt ceiling is the bigger deal but I think he is in the same situation in regards to the debt ceiling as he is in regards to the budget. There's a certain segment of his party that would like nothing better than to see us reach our debt limit and be forced to do the unthinkable. Whether they realize the destruction that would result or not, it's hard to tell. I'd like to say anyone in their position should but it's hard to tell with this bunch of clowns.
