  •  Southern Exceptionalism? (9+ / 0-)

Being from the Hillbilly State I understand some of the problems the South is facing. They are severely suffering from an "Us vs. Them" mentality where anyone not from their local area is to be distrusted. It's been drummed into them over two centuries to be beholden to their state leaders and always fight those outsiders. The war never ended. It just became a point of pride at the state level to denounce anything from those outsiders. Similar to the reaction you see today in the House as it relates to Obama.

dwindling but they still hold residual power. The South is headed for a massive sea change in political affiliation in about 10 years.  A large part of the south has seen a big influx of non-southern migration and growth in its non-white population.  As we've seen in VA, NC and FL, the exceptionalist crowd has reacted against that change by unifying around a nationalistic identity.  That has helped to keep Texas red, even though the demographics are pointing the other way, but not completely as we see from Obama's key wins in FL and VA.

The ACA, however, is the straw that will break the camel's back in favor of the Democrats.  Poor folks in the South are as likely to be white as non-white. When white southerners see other white southerners benefiting from the federal health exchanges, they are going to have a debate over expanding Medicaid everywhere.  That will allow for Democrats to have an opening to win some key races and change politics.  When Hillary Clinton runs in 2016, many white southerners will support her.  We've been looking for an issue to re-connect southern whites with their populist roots and get them to prioritize those issues over cultural ones.  This issue is it.

    •  Similarly they are still telling themselves (0+ / 0-)

that the Confederate Constitution was the real Intent of the (slaveowning) Founders.

Drafting the Confederate Constitution (Chapter 4 supplemental article)

Not many changes were made to the original United States constitution - Jefferson Davis gave a speech saying that the new constitution was what the founding fathers intended, and differed only in that it made their original intention more explicit (in a very good example of the still-common fallacy of thinking that the original founding fathers all agreed on anything).
In real life, Thomas Jefferson couldn't agree even with himself on slavery.
