dwindling but they still hold residual power. The South is headed for a massive sea change in political affiliation in about 10 years.  A large part of the south has seen a big influx of non-southern migration and growth in its non-white population.  As we've seen in VA, NC and FL, the exceptionalist crowd has reacted against that change by unifying around a nationalistic identity.  That has helped to keep Texas red, even though the demographics are pointing the other way, but not completely as we see from Obama's key wins in FL and VA.

The ACA, however, is the straw that will break the camel's back in favor of the Democrats.  Poor folks in the South are as likely to be white as non-white. When white southerners see other white southerners benefiting from the federal health exchanges, they are going to have a debate over expanding Medicaid everywhere.  That will allow for Democrats to have an opening to win some key races and change politics.  When Hillary Clinton runs in 2016, many white southerners will support her.  We've been looking for an issue to re-connect southern whites with their populist roots and get them to prioritize those issues over cultural ones.  This issue is it.
