  •  His Base is Swing Vote Republicans. (7+ / 0-)

We have a midterm election pending; they don't show up for those elections but we double down governing for them, as we did in 09-10.

wealthy people (mostly white because the wealthy are mostly white in this country).

At least, that's the base that votes for him and funds him that he also governs for.

The other parts of his base are: African-Americans who are inspired by the fact that he's the first African-American president, yellow-dog Democrats, and people who have an intense attachment to him as a personality.

The extent to which he governs for the African-Americans who are inspired by him becoming President is debatable. In my view, he does very little for them beyond existing and making some inspiring speeches. That's not nothing, but it's not policy changes that would help them either.  But he manages to deflect responsibility for that, like most Democrats, through the existence of some really vicious and obstructive Republicans in Congress.

As for the yellow-dog Democrats and those attached to him personally, he really needs to do nothing for them besides 1)remaining himself 2)staying President, and 3)maintaining his party affiliation. Those groups seem not to need anything else, like good policy, or at least they don't perceptibly mind not having it. They don't even mind the creation of bad policy. About the only things he could do that would disturb them are 1)change his party affiliation, or 2)resign.

The party of Kennedy is also the party of Eastland. The party of Javits is also the party of Goldwater. Where is our party? Where is the political party that will make it unnecessary to march on Washington?
