      I think he's holding together a massive country with a declining population, poor economy and radical politics that is threatened by almost everything major the U.S. has done.

      That doesn't mean that it's phony or lacking in value.

      They never say exactly what they're thinking, or what they think their real goals are. (Whether they're even aware of what their real goals are is another matter entirely; precious few are).

      Obama is perhaps the ne plus ultra when it comes to this.

      No one is claiming Putin is some kind of detached, disinterested observer. He has vested interests in Syria. However, that doesn't mean we shouldn't consider what he has to say.
