    They don't need a nest?  I've never considered that!  Now i have to completely revisit my world view. :)

      Nests are just for egg laying time. :-)

      Physiologically female birds need time to replace calcium they use from their bodies to make the eggshells! That is something that is wearing on the body... Hence the specific breeding times.  That and the abundance of food.

      Of course domesticated birds are a whole other story....

      This fall/winter, i have a little more material i want to clear out of the trail (bushes, small trees, etc.) in order to plant some bee & bird friendly things along the path.

      Knowing how easy it would be to not notice a hummingbird's nest, i've been a bit anxious about inadvertently destroying one.  But you're saying as long as they're not breeding, it's not a concern i should necessarily preoccupy myself with?  I'm finding this to be a very freeing notion!  I'd still be careful, of course, but ...

        Return to the same nesting spot each year to make another little nest.  And many times, they will make new nests for cleanliness sake. But if they find a safe area, they may return.
