  •  I'll be honest, I don't know what brought Putin (5+ / 0-)

to the table.  I don't believe the WH line that it was "the credible threat" of military action, because it never looked to me like that threat was all that credible -- and especially not in the days immediately preceding the Russian initiative.

Things have happened so quickly in the public realm, however, that I also really can't believe that the whole deal sprung magically following Kerry's so-called off-hand and off the cuff remark "I supposed he could turn his weapons over to international control, within a week."  Some day, I hope to live long enough, we may get access to the behind the scenes negotiating that resulted in this week's dramatic events.

I'm also left with this sneaking suspicion that Obama now owes Putin big time.  The Obama presidency was on the ropes on Monday.  Today, he's as well positioned as he has been throughout his presidency.

    •  I believe that Putin (0+ / 0-)

has a strong interest in wanting Assad to remain as head of state over any one of the other rebel faction groups that may work against Russia's interest.

I don't think that Obama owes Putin anything.  Putin is an idiot -- I mean a true Bush like idiot.  He's not very smart, as he ed op piece in the NYTs has made clear.

Putin is only interested in Putin.

    •  For one thing, Obama and Putin talked about it (6+ / 0-)

at the G 20. Both Obama and Putin have said that. I assume there was more behind the stage talks after that.

    •  along with whatever else Putin saved, that he (0+ / 0-)

wanted saved (whether that was Assad's administration, or not), he had the opportunity to save the day -- from the United States, in his estimation and that of anyone else in the global community that looks at us through narrowed eyes, nowadays.

he gained international credibility. he got a responsibility chip to put in his pocket.  he got to quarterback the play.

today, he became a real boy.
