    to drive stick in an ancient VW Beetle on the hills of Seattle. My instructor was a patient and encouraging female co-worker. I'm forever grateful to her because ever since, I've always owned and enjoyed cars with standard transmission.

      very forgiving, but once you learn the basic skills, they readily transfer to other cars.  It then comes down to how sensitive the clutch is, and how much play is in it.

      A VW has a lot of play in the clutch.
