But every time I see a grossly overweight if not morbidly obese person scarf down a triple bacon cheeseburger or gynormous ice cream, I'm filled with unexpressed contempt for them, especially if they appear to be reasonably well-off and educated and clearly know and can eat better. Basically, I have a really hard time with the "Today's culture, society and pressures made me do it" excuse, because that's what it often is, an excuse. Perhaps poor and less educated people have one, along with people who have congenital health problems and/or emotional issues that make losing weight extremely difficult, but everyone else, to one extent or another, does not, and is just being lazy.

If it only affected them then I guess it would be their business, but it doesn't, and isn't, because it affects their loved ones, employers, and society, in driving the overall costs of health care way up.

Perhaps most of these people really are too overworked, stressed out and depressed to do anything about it, and the overeating of junk food is one of their few escapes. But that just sounds like an easy cop out.
