  •  One problem is that most of the (19+ / 0-)

characters we label as trolls are no such thing.

Constantly making the same point, in an entirely repetitive manner, or following someone around being a pest, is not trolling.

What we have here is a different species, someone far more dangerous who is quite capable of de-railing an entire discussion if allowed to go unchecked. Fortunately, he (and they are almost exclusively male apart from one particularly persistent woman I encountered in a Usenet group many years ago), made the fatal error of choosing a User Name that immediately alerts you to the potential.

No one, and I mean NO ONE chooses fat_bastard for a screen name, not even in an attempt to be ironic. The name alone is designed to set the tone, and it belies the apparent reasonableness of the opening gambit.

You get a question like the one in the Diary from some innocuous use like twigg, or Gooserock, or aeou, raptavio ... etc, it's harder to know where to start.

One thing I learned years ago is that before you engage the enemy, learn as much about them as you can first.

Here on Daily Kos it's easy. Check their profile, read a couple of Diaries, scan through previous comments. You soon learn who needs a sharp rejoinder, and who you need to draw the sting from more carefully.

Trolls are their own worst enemy. They need the discord because that is their oxygen, and it will not take long before they either expose themselves, or leave.

You just have to give them sufficient rope :)

Good Job David .... Your rope was irresistible.

I hope that the quality of debate will improve,
but I fear we will remain Democrats.

    Who is twigg?
