  •  I have a few tricks (5+ / 0-)

that just totally mess up their thing. One is to wait til they insult you... And then agree with them, using vague terms that while sounding definitive, never actually mention the issue.

They have no idea how to respond to this. Sure, a few may try. But after two or three such responses, it just stops utterly.

The other way is... Okay, I admit, this one is extremely cruel. You may end up feeling bad about using it, but here it is.

On sites like Disqus, you can edit your post without it telling anyone it was edited. So what you do is make a statement about an important issue, and deliberately put straw man bait into the statement. It has to be written in a way that makes it not at all necessary to your point. It should also be about something that is... strange for maximum effect.

Then after they respond with their rant based entirely on your straw man bait... You delete that part of your post. it's really mean and really funny. It makes the responder whos using the straw man look totally insane.

I did it with a reference to ancient rome. the guy spent two paragraphs making strange metaphors, using ancient rome examples to attack my point.

Then I deleted the part about Rome utterly. My comment never needed it, and seemed to be absolutely as meaningful as it was before. So his post looked compeltely random and deranged.

Like I said, its really mean.
