  •  Ratio of bodies/news stories (4+ / 0-)

I'm pretty certain, scientific evidence would show that curve for body counts must be moved higher with a plug number for Race before you see it mentioned. Listen, times have changed. Four people dying in a gun "incident" just ain't what it used to be.

Components needed to hit the front pages and Sunday talk shows.

    1. White Children - many of them
    2. Crazy Lunatic,  Race may or may not add or subtract numerical value.
    3. Muslims adds points and adds 1000s of points if NSA discussions are occurring. Example:  Is it any coincidence that we are flooded with front page stories about the Kenya mall attack  especially since there are Americans involved in the attack that may or may not have been identified by our massive "pre-terrorist" intelligence agencies (17 of them) . Plus citizen's eyes that are supposed to report anytime they "see something".
    4. Large Body count. Must be in double digits for a busy news day unless they are Black and in Chicago.
    5. Slow news day  may or may not see relaxation of requirements for front page news. It really depends on what Justin Beiber has done that day.

It really isn't that hard. A real Scientist could do a peer reviewed research paper on this or there may be a Phd dissertation in this from multiple viewpoints.

    •  Whatever the coverage the freedom 2nd guns would (5+ / 0-)

call them anecdotes and stress millions made it home safely that day and gun owners are law abiding gun slingers. They might even add that guns saved millions from certain death each day.

... and for years we haven't.

To me we should stop focusing so much on mass shootings, horrible though they are, as the worst effect of our gun laws (or the lack thereof). What David's been documenting here week after week not only shows that we lose about a Newtown's worth of kids to gun mishandling alone every few months or so, but that far too many Americans have no clue about proper gun safety yet buy one anyway.

I saw yesterday, on the back of some gun enthusiast's bumper, one sticker among the many pro-gun ones that stood out: "Gun Control: It's about the control, not the guns." That's something we can run with.

        •  I so agree with that. The community can put limits (1+ / 0-)

on guns and gun ownership, but only the hand that owns the gun can control the gun.

          •  Maybe we should call for ... (1+ / 0-)

... gun owner control instead of gun control.

I would also like to note that many of these incidents are reminders that "guns don't kill people, people kill people" but not in the way the NRA usually frames that, much less some of the reporting authorities.

            •  I would certainly like it to be called gun limits (1+ / 0-)

              and ownership limits.

And call what we have now unlimited guns and unlimited gun ownership.

I would also like to see

              I lost my gun
I forgot I had my gun
And my gun went off by accident
changed from get out of jail free excuses to reasons a gun owner loses his gun ownership privilege for many years. They love their guns. The thought of losing their guns might keep their head in the game.

In the military, some of these people could be looking at the proverbial big chicken dinner ...

                •  The majority of gun owners do rise to this level (0+ / 0-)

                  of ownership.

What drives me crazy is that those same owners just sweep the lunatic fringe of gun slobs under the carpet because they are afraid of a massive gun confiscation. And it drives me crazy that they keep this notion alive causing needless carnage.
