is one of the great joys of being underwater - moving three-dimensionally, like a fish or a bird, rather than how we land based creatures operate in the world, across a surface. So - you know how cool silhouettes are against the light, and enjoy creatures who live on roofs of overhangs! And can judge 15' or 30' without looking at instruments, right?

Cold water diving. I would never dive these rocks right here, way too hazardous. Even at slack tide the currents are weird, true generally with all our channels and islands (I've been caught in upwellings where I had to cling to the rock to avoid popping up, scary). Plenty of other rocks and walls though. Here's the thing about diving in the NW: the viz is 20' on a good day, 40' is an exceptional day, what with the thick plankton in these waters. There have been times when I couldn't see my hand stretched out, much less my buddy. That means you hang out alongside the rock, no big vistas. You have to descend 30' to get below the seaweed growing on the rock, which is not that interesting. So it's usually fairly dark, have to use a light. And cold of course.

However, all that being said, once you're there, it is fantastically dramatic and colorful - orange, purple, blue, bright green, yellow, patterns... The invertebrates are much bigger than in the tropics - nudibranchs, seastars, anemones and such...they are the stars. Kelp forests. It's very beautiful diving, if you can handle the hardship.

Great you out to a new place with this cooler weather. I look forward to your report!
