America has a history of over-reacting to its last screw up.  We become too isolationist or too involved.  Wars should not have monetarial "benefits."  Wars should be the last resort and fought only in self defense or for humanitarian interests--the latter a bitch to define.  There was no gain to be gotten to join WWII--we needed a bloody invitation--yet we knew about the "purification" of the Aryan race.
Iran is an interesting case--as is Cuba.  We've used non military means to get results--which has not succeeded--but not really failed.  If we had invaded either country (not counting the Bay of Pigs insanity), and won, we might not be happy with the results.
We've only had one president who understood this--Jimmy Carter--and he got bad press for being moral.  WTF

Under capitalism, man exploits man. Under communism, it's just the opposite. John Kenneth Galbraith .
