  •  The are several wars going on in Syria (0+ / 0-)
And everyone with a smidgen of knowledge about the Middle East is pretty clear about Syria being in the midst of various proxy wars, not a civil war.
The biggest background factor at play in this conflict is the natural gas pipeline from gas fields in Israel and the Gulf coast (Qatar vs Iran) must go through Syria to connect with Europe. The dollar value of this gas is in the trillions of dollars. Follow the money.

But there is also a civil war going on. There are a considerable number of people who still support Assad. If this were not true the conflict would be over by now.

Dancing in Damascus as the country burns: Clubbers who are still enjoying life despite Syria’s civil war

Around a dozen nightclubs remain open to revellers in the Syrian capital
Others enjoy nights out at salsa classes or Arabic karaoke nights
The 30-month-old civil war is estimated to have killed around 100,000 so far

"There is no military solution" is Obama's #1 message for 2 years.  There may be no diplomatic solution either, but the least-worst solution should really be the top priority, don't you think?
"There is no military solution" invariably followed by "Assad must go" as a perquisite for any "diplomatic" talks. Notice that the Syrians can have their "democracy" but ONLY after "Assad must go". This kind of hubris and hypocrisy goes nowhere in the ME.

It has only been since Obama has dropped this request has there been any movement diplomatically.

Why The U.S. Needs Bashar Assad To Stay For Now

Israel is still calling for "Assad must go".

    Israel: Assad must go

    •  According to Syrians, those who live there, (0+ / 0-)

Assad must go, Saudi Arabia and Iran should fight it out in their own countries, a free and democratic society is not possible in a religious state, etc.

40 groups fighting proxy wars over oil, Shia vs Sunni, Kurds hated by most non-Kurds, Russia's only Mediterranean base threatened, does not equal a classic civil war.  This is way more complex than rebels versus corrupt government, as is Egypt.  We love simple constructs which is why we're never right about the ME.

I'm not looking for a love that will lift me up and carry me away. A love that will stroll alongside and make a few amusing comments will suffice.
