  •  I don't do a seating chart. (4+ / 0-)

I figure they're all grown-ups.  They don't have to be sitting in the same place every time.  I just pass around a sign-in sheet.

    •  The prof I TA for (5+ / 0-)

is pretty strict about cell phone use, note-taking, sleeping, etc. We have the seating chart so we can mark people for texting or sleeping, which will result in them being marked absent for the day.

I don't mind if you're straight. Just don't flaunt it in public.

      •  Well, then, I understand. (4+ / 0-)

I tell my students they are free to use class time however they want as long as they don't disturb others.  Sleep?  Go right ahead.  Text?  No problem.  What's that?  You flunked the exam?  Aw.  That's too bad.  I can't imagine why that happened.

        •  That's my philosophy too (4+ / 0-)

          But alas.

Although, in the smaller discussion section setting, I do get pretty pissed off about cell phone usage, just because I think it's rude and disruptive. I have no problem telling people to leave.
