  •  We should not abandon progressive principles (0+ / 0-)

out of fear of short-term political pain.  The republicans don't give 2 shits about how many people are slaughtered with firearms.  Not.  2.  Shits.

Progressives do.  And most progressives believe that gun law reform is part of that solution.

Once upon a time, supporting marriage equality was a political loser.  Some progressives hid from the issue and a few won elections in the short term.

Other progressives organized and kept fighting to win over the middle.  Progressives changed opinions and they changed the political math on that issue.  Now, marriage equality is a winner.

We can do that with gun law reform.  If your primary objection to gun law reform is that it will lose elections for democrats, please reconsider your position or at least get out of the way.  You are like the democrats who avoided taking a stand on marriage equality when it was not a winner at the polls.

If your primary objection is just that your position on gun laws is identical to that of republicans, well, thanks for nothing, I guess.

    •  I will always stand in the way of the (0+ / 0-)

authoritarian controls wishing to be implemented in this nation.  Us progressives have a nefarious past of pushing things such as eugenics. Which has led directly to the creation of "Family Court" whereby Americans are routinely denied due process, trial by jury, facing ones accusers, etc...where hearsay is accepted ad "fact of law".

My objections to the current "gun control debate" is the denial of my absolute right to defend myself with whatever tool I find necessary.  Our government has made it clear it will not defend me personally, ever.

This "debate" isn't even close to marriage equity.  This is restricting rights NOT expanding them.  Therein lies the fundamental difference between what you define as "progressive" and what I define as "progressive".  You wish to restrict Americans rights, I wish to expand and protect them, and doing so in a safe reasonable manner.  This also points out the very fundamental difference of what we perceive is the duty and role of our created government and what the Constitution does, allows and prevents.

Be clear here, "guns for everyone" has never been my goal.  Living in a country where Americans don't feel the need to own a weapon is and has always been my target.  We'll NEVER get there if the government itself says we live in the Wild West.

I will not agree to the soft-kill policies Republicanism enables.  It's okay to kill 133,000 each year from poverty?  Its okay to outsource our jobs to slave-labored nations?  It's okay to generationally destroy American lives, especially the lives of minorities under the failed fake war on drugs?

Republicanism's over the past 30+ yrs has move the overton window so far to the right that our current POTUS describes his own policies as Moderate Republican.  We're then told we should lap it up like good peons and be happy in the gilded cages they've created for us.

      NO THANKS.

The problem with your position is that while you try to brainwash people into believing what you stand for is legitimate, thousands are still dying from violence of all types, including your "gun violence".  We have, right at this moment, the power to save millions of Americans, not just the few thousand that you've decided today that you want to save.  It's a petty and selfish ploy wrapped up in the meme of "saving the children".

      I don't believe you anymore.

While we are still in control of this government we could do so many things.  Say like ending the drug war.  California cities proved that once they decriminalized pot, their violent crime rates went down!  ONE POLICY INITIATIVE and we could reduce crimes by 61%.

I'm going to stop now and consider writing a diary on this before I continue this rant.

      Maybe you'll get my point.

      STOP. BEING. SO. SELF-RIGHTEOUS.

And Stop peeing on my back and telling me it's just raining.

        •  Hot damn, and here I thought we were having (0+ / 0-)

a debate,  "intellectual veneer"...this means you can't truly argue your position or it's results and clearly your only goal is to "get the guns" nothing more or less.  Obviously it's not about saving lives.

          Shameful.

I'd love to know what you perceive as "radical and absurd"?

Is it that I believe our government was created to progressively expand and protect individual rights for all people, not destroy them?  And to do so in a safe, effective manner?

Or that I suggested the decriminalization of pot as the first step in reducing violence, including you pet "gun violence"???

Or the fact that I pointed out the petty nature of your position?

Or that I pointed out that our government has decided it has no constitutional duty to protect any of us, effectively re-establishing a Wild West mentality in this society? "I'm sorry Mr. & Mrs. Taxpayer, the 2.1 trillion you pay each year will not be used to protect you, because we don't have to!"

Or is it the fact that you're propaganda of "saving the children" is hoax?

Or is it the fact that our current POTUS has the designation of being a "democrat" but readily admits his policies are Moderate Republican?  The same mentality that has generationally destroyed the lives of millions of Americans.

You know what, I really don't want an answer to what you believe.  All you want is to get the guns, you don't care about anything else.

And be clear, I will stand in your way when you attempt to destroy this nation further.

          Good day.
