Then they would have only held sit-ins in desegregated restaurants. Anti-war activists also have deliberately gone to jail out of protest. I'm not saying that's what Occupy should have done, but if they didn't want to get arrested or forcibly removed then they had to do whatever the local enforcement said no matter how unfair it seemed. Why do you think there wasn't the same incidents in redder parts of the country? Police chiefs in redneckistan would take great pride in smashing hippie heads and boasting about it on Fox, and the Occupiers knew it.

I realize that sometimes sacrifice is necessary, but criticizing for a lack of sacrifice doesn't help. That sort of civil disobedience does require sacrifice because the violence involved is what they're protesting against. When we march down the street we shouldn't have to worry about that. OWS wasn't really about civil disobedience. Civil disobedience is when you violate an unjust law to protest it. There were no laws that OWS could violate that would protest those laws to get rid of them. Direct action in the form of blocking banks and such was a good tactic, but direct action is better if you don't get caught and punished for it because then you can go do it another day.

The focus on arrests was a big problem from occupy. It was seen as being something more important than it really was. A cult of sacrifice has been built from those civil rights victories and it just isn't warranted.
